Avatar is the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office

The re-release of Avatar took place a couple of months before the global release of the extremely anticipated sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

Avatar is one of the top-grossing films of all time at the worldwide box office, gathering $2.84 billion. Comscore box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian says playing the original film will help provide a marketing tailwind ahead of the sequel.

“Disney sees a benefit in re-releasing the movie as a reminder to fans in North America, most of whom have not seen the all-time global box office champ since its special-edition release almost 12 years ago,” says Dergarabedian.

Each of the four Avatar sequels will focus on Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, along with Navi Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña, and their family and the lengths they go to keep each other safe.
